Getting your Texas License to Carry (LTC) is an important step.
But for many people, it doesn’t solve the real problem:
“Am I actually comfortable carrying a handgun in my everyday life?”
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
A Pattern I Saw in Law Enforcement
During my time as a deputy sheriff, I responded to many calls involving victims of assault and other crimes.
In some of those cases, I discovered something that stuck with me.
The victim had a License to Carry.
When I asked if they were carrying at the time, I often heard the same response:
“After I got my LTC, the gun just sat in the drawer at home. I rarely carry… but I would if I were more comfortable.”
That wasn’t a one-time response—it was a pattern.
I Still Hear the Same Thing Today
Now, as a DPS-certified LTC instructor, I hear the same thing from students during intake conversations.
Many students come into class with a clear goal:
They want to feel comfortable enough to carry.
In fact, more than half of students have a short- or long-term goal of achieving that level of comfort for everyday carry.
Why So Many People Struggle With Comfort
There are a few common reasons:
- They’re not fully comfortable with firearm safety
- They’re unsure about Texas laws and use of force
- They don’t have a clear everyday carry plan
- They haven’t worked through real-world scenarios
- They lack confidence in decision-making
And for many, there’s another important factor.
What Brings People to the LTC Class
A significant number of students don’t sign up casually.
They come to class because of a life incident.
Something happened—either to them or someone close to them—that made personal protection real.
They’re trying to solve a problem.
But after the class ends, many realize they still don’t feel fully comfortable carrying.
The Gap Most LTC Training Doesn’t Fill
The LTC class is designed to meet state requirements.
But it’s not designed to build long-term comfort or confidence.
Large classes can make it difficult for students to get the personal attention they need. Some may hesitate to ask questions or worry about making mistakes in front of others.
Real learning—and real comfort—often requires something more personal.
